STOCKTON TO MALONE

I have learned something about Me.

I am John Stockton.

I know close to nothing about sports. I didn't learn what a "down" is in football until Lynley explained it to me so I knew why we were doing a certain cheer at a certain time. But my dad took me to Jazz games during the Stockton/Malone glory days, and I remember that John Stockton was the Master of Assists. (And I even know what an "assist" is.) That's me. Master of Assists. Or at least that's what I want to be.

I don't want to be The Guy In The Room. I want to be the guy that The Guy In The Room counts on.

An example: I was reading a photography blog, and on the blog, the photographer mentioned her assistant.

That's who I like being. How I'm most comfortable. Not the photographer in the limelight, so to speak, but the guy that makes the photographer better at her job. The guy the photographer counts on. With the Rookie Cookie blog, I love that it's not my blog, that I'm not the writer or the cook, but the one that the cook counts on. Is it because it's a position of less pressure? Less public responsibility? Perhaps. Further introspection for another time.

Forgive any arrogance in this (or don't), but I think Master of Assists is a role I play fairly well. The one behind the curtains. The one on the side. The one helping the cogs to turn.

It's always lovely learning bits like that about one's self. It's awfully handy in decision making.

Yes, I would much rather be a "Stockton". I hate being in the limelight, but I love helping others get theirs. I always pictured you as "the man" though. Funny. You really are a show stopper though. You make my day, always.
