THURSDAY ASK-N-GAB • THIRTY-SIXTH

This week's question is brought to you by Rookie Cookie.

Somewhere within our many email exchanges last week, she asked, If you were going to be in town on your birthday, what would you request for your birthday dinner made by me? I think birthday dinner says a lot about a person. And what kind of dessert would you want?

What a great question. A perfect question for a Thursday Ask-n-Gab.

My answer: It took me three days to answer this one. I love food. And I love it when I get to choose. Love it when when I don't have to tell people not to worry about me and to cook up all the meat they want--I'll just eat the sides or find something else to nibble on. I love it when I don't have to politely decline the soup because it was made with chicken broth; I love it when I don't have to explain that, yes, chicken broth is still meat and I'd prefer that you not be huffy about my polite refusal. (Don't worry, Whitney has never been huffy; she thinks catering a menu to a vegetarian is a great adventure.)

My birthday. My menu.

I tend to like pretty simple meals, and my birthday selection is no exception.

Whitney, for a birthday appetizer (that I would enjoy at the counter while we chatted and I watched you cook the rest; I like watching you cook) I want you to make me hummus (extra lemony, please) and bake up some pita chips. For dinner, I'd like you to whip up some of your dreamy pesto for a pesto pasta with olives and grape tomatoes. (I'd also like it to be socially appropriate for me to lick the bowl afterward) On the side I'd like Panzanella and a fruit salad made mostly of strawberries. For dessert--like I even need to spell it out; you already know--just give me a pile of those Lime Squares. And with that, a very Happy Birthday to me.

So Whit, you say that a birthday dinner says a lot about a person. What does mine say about me? Much like with palmistry, I expect you to read my birthday dinner choices and tell me my future.

I tasted hummus once, and as much as I'd love to say I was licking my plate clean in exstatic motions, I cant lie. It gave me nothing, only texture.

It is possible, of course, that I didnt taste the right hummus. I will definitely give it another go if I ever get the chance.

For my birthday I'd ask for Chili Crayfish in Aïoli for starters, my dads best home made chili fish soup and some wine on the side for main dish and the world largest muffin for dessert.

of course. :P

If you come visit for your birthday, I can arrange all of that quite easily. Vegetarian food seems so easy to put together anyways.

For me, I would have Ethan make my birthday dinner. I want roast chicken with mashed potatoes and chicken gravy. Dessert is made my me. Chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and a tall glass of water- not milk.

Well, maybe I want someone else to make it. Like I could really go for tempura fried California rolls from Tokyo Wako. Maybe some teriyaki steak too. I dunno.

I would love hot spinach & artichoke dip with good crackers. I don't care what kind of meat, either turkey or chicken breast, roasted please. and real mashed potatoes with gravy, brown sugar carrots, and steamed broccoli. and for dessert, a warm brownie drowning in a scoop of vanilla ice cream with hot fudge on top. oh, and a diet coke, lite ice.

Does it have to be a birthday dinner? We always did a special birthday breakfast. I love french toast, so I would want that. That would work for dinner too. So, french toast with bacon, fruit, and orange juice.

For dessert? Carrot Cake with cream cheese frosting.

Sorry, but I'd want Ethan to fix the rib eye and mushrooms. But the 5 vegetable side dishes I would ask from Whitney. Her choice. And the chocolate truffle pie with only one candle on top.

I would ask for Chicken or Shrimp Curry. The coconut variety please. Maybe Rabid should cook it for me she should be an expert now, right?

Also, I admit I could be a little slow. I am just getting to know you. Is your birthday soon?

Sparks said...

No, no, Winder. It's in April. We were just talking about birthday dinners in general.

Mmmmmm. I want a cheese plate with fruit for breakfast, sushi for lunch and something grilled for dinner. Dessert? Mochi.

Jessica I am with you... Breakfast for dinner. An excellent French toast with some great country potatoes. If I could not have that I would request Tiki Masala from Indian Garden and some Vegetable Samosas. For dessert... I would choose my Panettone bread pudding with cinnamon syrup. I stole it from food network and tweaked it to my liking. Truly amazing stuff.

@kelsey, we should talk about you doing a guest post on my blog with that bread pudding. Seriously, let's talk.

Kelsey, I knew that when Whitney read about your bread pudding she'd want a little of that action.

When I was a kid, I always asked for fried chicken and macaroni and cheese (the Kraft kind from a box, not homemade).

Now, I think I would ask for sliced home-grown tomatoes with a lot of toppings - hummus, mozzarella and basil, salt and pepper, arugula, ranch dressing, feta, etc., etc., etc...nothing beats a good tomato.

We get a special breakfast and dinner in our house. I will just list the breakfast since that is all that sounds good currently. Being a breakfast fiend, I would have a smorgasbord of ebelskivers with pomegranates, sourdough ricotta pancakes with blueberries, hash browns with yellow peppers and green onions sautéed in olive oil topped with melted colby-Jack cheese, fresh fruit consisting of Mt. Rainer cherries, kiwis, Cara Cara oranges, tangerines, blood oranges, pomegranates, Jonagold apple slices, pineapple, bananas, red grapes, and pears. All gulped down with cold water.

Nice fantasy considering all those fruit are never in season at the same time.

@lars - if you like hash, you would love what Ethan has been making for catered breakfasts. Three kinds of potatoes, bell peppers of all colors, green chiles and hollandaise sauce. So ridiculously good.

Lars said...

@rookie - is it vegetarian friendly? That is the problem I always run into....mis padres love to cook the hash in bacon grease...

That does sound nom nom. I love me some potatoes, it is quite ridiculous. I live in Idaho though so it is ok. I will whip up mashed potatoes and eat them solo for a meal. Tony Chachere's creole seasoning in the mash taters puts the perfect kick in there that I like.

Appetizer: bruschetta made with heirloom tomatoes
Dinner: Steak with lots of A.1, mashed potatoes made with red skinned potatoes, and some delicious gravy, and maybe purple jello and cheetos
Dessert: Creme brulee topped with assorted berries

@Rookie, I would be honored to do a guest post. I always make the bread pudding for christmas morning (my husband makes killer biscuits and gravy, but on Christmas I want something sweet) I am actually making a batch for friends and would be happy to document the process....
@ Megan... could you forward my email to Mrs. Rookie for me.

My b-day is at the end of summer, so I would always request burgers on the grill, clam dip (a family favorite), watermelon and grandma's delicious potato salad. But, since it has been so long since I've had an awesome sunday dinner caliber meal,I would probably choose roast beef with shubidangs (the rest of the world refers to that as yorkshire pudding), mashed potatoes and gravy, and roasted carrots. Heaven!

I love seafood, pasta and cheese. Just be creative, do your thing and I'm loving it for sure. Dessert would be white chocolate raspberry cheesecake - water, no milk please.
