THURSDAY ASK-N-GAB • TWENTY-FOURTH

My answer: Late. I'm not one of those mythical Morning People. I would so much rather stay up until two a.m. and get up at ten than go to bed at ten and get up at six. The morning isn't fun. The night is.

amen.
i've always gone to bed around midnightish.
but, now that i've got a child in school i'm forced to get up an hour and a half earlier than what has been our normal time for the last 5 years. it's killing me, and i can't seem to keep my eyes open past 10pm.

I am in the bed by 9pm. I normally stay up till about 10 talking with the husband. We get up around 5:30am. I love mornings. I am one of those annoying people who smile and say "Good morning" to everyone I pass before noon. And I don't drink coffee, being a morning person comes naturally.

i'm not a morning person either, but with an 8am class i have to be. i've also started running with a friend in the mornings. at 5:30am. yeah. if i weren't such a fatty i would stay in bed, but since i am a fatty i've had to turn into a morning person. if i don't get in bed by 10pm i'll regret it in the morning. oh, how i miss sleeping in.

Isn't it the most awful thing that what we are and what we must do don't coincide, Jessica and Morgan?

I am a night person. I am not a morning Megan. However, my job requires not only that I behave as a morning Megan but that I do it as morning Kathryn does--smiling and friendly. (That's the easy part; it's the getting out of bed and not falling down the stairs part that's less easy.)

Not as early as I should, and boy do I pay the price the next day...

Usually around midnight and I regret it every morning, especially since pregnancy has really set it. There is nothing like pregnant tired.

Dude, you're not even that pregnant and already it owns your arse? That's a raw deal if ever I've heard one.

Seinfeld captured best:

I never get enough sleep. I stay up late at night, cause I'm Night Guy. Night Guy wants to stay up late. 'What about getting up after five hours sleep?', oh that's Morning Guy's problem. That's not my problem, I'm Night Guy. I stay up as late as I want. So you get up in the morning, you're ..... (?), you're exhausted, groggy, oooh I hate that Night Guy! See, Night Guy always screws Morning Guy. There's nothing Morning Guy can do. The only thing Morning Guy can do is try and oversleep often enough so that Day Guy loses his job and Night Guy has no money to go out anymore.

In bed by midnight up around 5 [ 6 on weekends ]. You will note that I am not a subscriber to your prohibition on caffeine.

These days I head to bed to read around 9pm and turn out the lights to sleep around 9:30-10pm. I'm up again sometime between 1 and 3 for the first nighttime feeding. :)

Tom, acknowleding that you get a mere 5 hours of sleep on weeknights, on behalf of humanity, I beg you to get a caffeine drip.

Keli'i and Megan said...

Oooooo. I have heard of these illustrious caffeine drips and how do I subscribe to one? I'm in bed by 10pm and up by 5am. My kids are early risers...5:15am, but all three are in bed by 7pm, so I can't complain. But mornings or nights, either way, I'm pretty good...as long as I get seven or eight hours.

Hey and congratulations, Rookie! Is this baby number three? And yes, there is nothing harder than pregnancy exhaustion...especially on baby number three because you can't slow down for anything.

I go to bed around 1 or 2 and arise around 8:30. If it were up to me, which it kind of is, I would go to bed at 11 and wake up at 6. I am a morning person who lives late out of necessity.

rabidrunner said...

Asleep by 10 awake by 5. Which usually means I'm up before 5. I really wish I could function on 5 hours of sleep. But cannot. I like mornings better than evenings. Something about it being more quieter in the morning.

I have a marathon in about 15.5 days. This means that Spouse will ensure I'm in bed by 9:00 between now and then. He's so good that way.

i go to bed around 12 and get about 8 and i am exhausted every day. i feel like an old lady! i miss the days when i could stay up til 1 or 2 and get up about 6 or 7 and feel fine. feeling so exhausted around bed time really cuts down on evening Activity, if you know what i mean.

Good question, but can't stand it. I want the luxury of a button I can push that pauses the world while I sleep until my hearts content. Since I don't...I'm up far too late and up way too early. Even if I try to get to bed early I lay in bed thinking of all of things I could be accomplishing were I not in bed. I have 4 delightful alarm clocks. Even if I wanted to sleep in, I could not.

If I'm in bed by midnight-thirty, it's a miracle. I'm up at 5:55 every workday morning and, like Tom, I have a caffeine IV attached the the driver's seat for my commute. I am certainly not a morning person and (at this point in my life) think it's a sign of old age if I even think about getting in bed before 11pm. Granted, I'm child-free, pet-free, plant-free...so I'm sure that will change in time...

I wish I were a morning person. I am terribly productive when I wake up early. However, insomnia/baby/night-terror-having-husband does little to help me get a decent nights sleep. I take it where I can get it.

Lars said...

Depends on the day. I have insomnia so some nights I don't sleep. On a good day, somewhere between 2 a.m and 4 a.m My best work comes out at night which isn't really conducive to being awake by 5:30 a.m but at least I have adapted to functioning on limited sleep.

These days? Asleep around 2:30-3:00, up between noon and two.

Setting my own hours as a cosmetologist is the best thing that's ever happened to me.

For years I have gone through bouts of insomnia. I can go weeks without sleeping. I edit recent sessions, organize my shoes by style and color as well as color coodinate my clothes (cause nothing is on at 3 in the morning!) and read, read, read.

When I am not in insomnia mode I go to bed around 11:30. Unless of course Bret and I want to get it on...then we go upstairs at 10:45 on the dot...or at least turn off the TV at that time.

p.s. No matter how late I go to bed my body wakes me up at 6. To me sleeping in is 7 and anything past 8 means a total waste of the day. That's how I was raised and boy has it stuck. Somedays I do wish that I could sleep until noon though.
