Please consdier this a public service announcement of sorts.
See here, an abbreviated list of fonts that should be shot (or at the very least, disabled): Bradley Hand, Comic Sans, Curlz MT (and double darn for having that Z replace the S; you know how I hate that), Hobo, Papyrus (not pronounced "Pappy Russ"), Party LET, Tagettes, and Zapfino.
(See below for examples so that you can do us all a favor and idenitfy which fonts to never, ever use again.)
With love and affection and gratitude and good things, assuming you do what I want,Meg

Noted. Although, I'll admit I am a fan of Papyrus (puh-pie-russ?)
I love Bradley hand and Papyrus! And that Zapfino...might be on my new list. ;)
I've heard the Comic Sans before, the ick factor regarding it.
But Zapfino fits my personality... it's Eyetaliano right? I'm Eyetaliano.
Oops. Forgot who I was logged in as. Shhhhh!
Papyrus? Really?
Noooooooooooo!
You guys are breaking my heart. Papyrus (yes, Alicia, you got the pronunciation right) is a terrible, overused, unoriginal, often badly matched font. There are thousands if fonts--my own computer houses over 3,000, making it such that we need not rely on ugly fonts that people use for vinyl wall crap.
Two different businesses on Main St. in my hometown use Papyrus on their outdoor signage: "Village Desserts" and some yoga place.
I'm not sure what the appeal of the white-on-black combined with the Egyptian look do for these places, one which serves cake and one which tries to burn it off.
Also, as detailed in a recent post of my own, I have chosen to boycott any company I catch using Comic Sans in signs or literature. Sorry, Beanie Babies.
Also, I think it's "Puh-pi-riss"
I agree with you- wholeheartedly!
Adam, you're a committed genius. Boycott businesses with really, really bad taste.
And I just pronounce it like the Egyptian biodegradable paper, however that ends up working out phonetically.
Oh, and too bad that this list is just a few of the many fonts we should slaughter. It's a very long list (and activating those few fonts so that I could post them here was hassle enough, ya know?).
Yes, this does just come down to personal opinion, but despite preferences, for we all have them despite the distaste of others, are undisputable.
Like Papyrus being an eyesore without creativity. (And the others too.)
i used to work (as a teacher) with a guy who used comic sans for EVERYTHING. it drove me absolutely insane. class worksheets i can learn to forgive but no test should ever be made with a font like that...
You seriously have an opinion about everything. I shouldn't be surprised, but somehow, I am.
That's funny, Megan, 'cause it surprises me that someone wouldn't have an opinion!
You brought me out of blog stalking for this one. I agree completely. I would add Scriptina to my short list. I am so sick of seeing it used on wedding announcements.
Welcome, Wendy. Glad to have you. I am with you all the way on Scriptina.
I'm glad Footlight is safe. phew! I will discontinue usage of all others mentioned. I just hope you don't stroll into my L.A. church building and see my Primary signs...
What about Verdana? I hate its total lack of finesse and imagination. What are your favorites, Meg?
Ah, weather, a good question indeed. It depends on what I'm working on. On my office magnet board I actually have a printed sheet of 50 go-to fonts to glance at if I'm stuck. And that list has a tendency to frequenty reinvent itself. I don't have a reasonably short list of favorites, but right now I am finding very useful Existence Unicase Light, among so many others.
i stick with arial narrow.
there are a lot of preschool sites that use comic sans, and i can't read them:)
Does it also bother you when publishers or authors or whoever it is that decides what the inside of a book looks like uses these very fonts for "handwritten" paragraphs in a sad attempt to further illustrate the character's personality?
Cause it sure does bother me.
I don't have a choice in fonts. I have a graphic designer slave that does it for me.
Wow - interesting to see so many people that are bothered by others people's use of particular fonts! I guess I have never thought about this before. After looking at the ones you have called out as needing to be shot I can say that Curlz MT is the worst looking thing I have seen I think - who would ever use that? Yuck.
I think some people believe these fonts are okay when utilized for baby shower/bridal shower/any other cutesy shower invitations. I think that makes the invitation that much more annoying. I mean, if I can't even read the font how would I know to attend the event!
Is there such thing as Egyptian paper that isn't biodegradable?
This post is proving to be one of the most entertaining to date. I've seen your handwriting... I think you should design your own font.
Smart aleck. My ma is sort of an Egypt freak; all I know is that there is some modern papyrus in a frame in her basement. Oh, and in Angels and Demons, Galileo's (no idea how to spell that) Diagrama folio that Langdon and Vittoria stole from the Vatican archives was made of papyrus and it disintigrated when Langdon got it wet.
How nice of you on the handwriting; I'm just glad you could read any of the note; my daily handwriting is highly illegible.
I probably have 500 fonts downloaded (I'm a website designer & marketing consultant) because I get bored and like to discover new looks. Thanks for the tip about Existence Unicase Light. I'm digging the Futura family for body fonts these days.
Right with you about punctuation and mispronunciations, too. And how about the improper "your, you're, its, it's and all their cousins?"
oh good heavens i hate those fonts. i thought maybe i was alone in my loathing . . . ugh. they're like fonts i would have loved when i was in sixth grade making banners with print shop.
oh, and a loud THANK YOU for the honesty on the previous post . . . i've always w o n d e r e d . . .
Curlz MT - when others use this font I just about go crazy at time trying to figure out what has been written.
TOE-TALLY agree.
You know there's a blog dedicated to the reporting of Papyrus sightings, right? (Haven't read the comments here, don't know if anyone else brought it up.) I reported some Mormon signs to the website. Also stole a flyer off a bulletin board in my town so I could take a photo of it for the blog.
UrbanFonts.com has great free fonts and not a whack of ad crap.
hi, im a friend of shelbys.. but thank you sooo much for this post!
I swear not many people understand how utterly awful and overdone these fonts have been in the... well idk past FOREVER!
A lady in my ward just wrote a book and got it published and the title on these branly new bounded books was PAPYRUS font.. i wanted to vomit on all of them.
I would agree with the addition of Scriptina, and I cringe at every instance of Comic Sans. I love this website: http://bancomicsans.com/home.html
